CLIVE HUMPHREYS

DVSA APPROVED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

Hi! My name is Clive Humphreys and I have been a Driving Instructor since April 1997.

I have taught in many areas of the country such as Reading, Oxford and Newbury, before moving to the West Country in 2002.

I am now generally based around the Launceston test centre, working from Bude covering Stratton, Kilkhampton, and all areas surrounding Bude.

My students have a very good pass rate and I have been assessed as a Grade A instructor by the DVSA (February 2017).

I have also been involved in the training of individuals to become driving instructors, and the training of MOD RAF personnel at RAF Brize Norton and RAF Benson.

THE STEPS TO GETTING YOUR LICENCE

There are three major steps towards getting your licence and on the road.
I can help and advise you from start to finish.

Home: FAQ

WHEN CAN I LEARN TO DRIVE?

To start learning to drive you must be a minimum of 17 years old and hold a valid Provisional Driving Licence.

Application forms for your Provisional Driving Licence can be obtained from your local post office or online at the DVSA website.

THE THEORY TEST

The theory test is split into two parts. The first part consists of a multiple choice question section. To pass this you must answer 43 out of 50 questions correctly.
The second part is the hazard perception test. During the hazard perception, you will be shown a series of videos from a drivers perspective. You must click when you see a developing hazard and you are scored on how quickly you recognise a hazard.
The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75. Candidates must pass both parts of the test to obtain a test certificate.

THE PRACTICAL TEST

Your practical driving test will take about 40 minutes. It will begin with an eyesight test, before driving on public roads.

'Show me tell me' questions

The 'show me' question can be asked during the independent driving part of the test.

The 'tell me' questions (where you explain how to carry out a safety task) will be asked at the start of the test before you start driving.

During the test the examiner will give you directions which you should follow. Test routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and will include a range of typical road and traffic conditions.

You will also be asked to drive independently for around 20 minutes.

During the independent part of the test, most candidate will be asked to follow directions from a sat nav. One in 5 driving tests won't use a sat nav. You will need to follow traffic signs for around 20 minutes instead.

Reversing exercises

You will be asked to perform one reversing exercise, chosen from:

  • Parallel park at the side of the road

  • Park in a bay. Either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out.

  • Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse 2 car lengths, and then rejoin the traffic.

You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

You can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one or more serious or dangerous faults you will fail the test.
